Instructor Tips

Classroom Set-Up

Install Microsoft FrontPage98 on the instructor computer and each student workstation. Besides the FrontPage98 installation, the exercises depend upon a Web browser being installed.  The screen captures were taken using Internet Explorer 3.0.  If at all possible, try to install a second Web browser on the student workstations, such as Netscape Navigator.

The exercises have the students open existing FrontPage Webs for them to work on. Download the support file, which contains those Webs. That file is compressed and must be uncompressed using WinZip 6.2 (or later) for Windows95. Once the file is uncompressed, you will find a folder called "fp98,part2" that contains the sub-folder called "Webs". That folder will contain several sub-folders for each of the Webs mentioned in the manual. The Webs must be imported (i.e., you can not just copy them to the student workstation to open them in FrontPage) into FrontPage.

Here is how to import the Webs:

  1. Copy the "Webs" folder to each workstation or if you have a networked classroom, set up access to that folder from one PC.
  2. Open FrontPage98
  3. At the Start Up dialog box, choose Create a New FrontPage Web, then click OK.
  4. Select Import Existing Web.
  5. Type frames for the name of the Web and click OK.
  6. Browse to or type in the folder where the Webs reside and locate the "frames" folder. For example, if you installed the files on the hard drive you would go to: C:\fp98,part2\Webs\frames. Check the "Include subfolders" box (very important), then click Next.
  7. Click Next to have all of the files imported.
  8. Click Finish to import the Web.
  9. Click on the Open FrontPage Web button to import the second Web that is needed for the course.
  10. Repeat the process of importing using multimedia for the name of the Web and locating the files for importing in the C:\fp98,part2\Webs\multimedia folder.
  11. Repeat the process for the third Web, name it survey and locate the folder containing the Web in: C:\fp98,part2\Webs\survey

Tips on Instructing the Course

The following are a few tips for instructors. Most are simple suggestions on how to extend a few of the exercises or add new ones, should you have more time.

Lesson 1:

  • Editing the templates is what takes the students the most time, but you can have them at least open a few of the FrontPage Editor templates just to see what they look like.
  • There is not an exercise for the FrontPage Editor Wizards section, but you may want to run through the Personal Home Page Wizard with the students.
  • Have the students experiment with a couple of other Themes.
  • NOTE:  there is a Theme Designer supplied on the FP98 installation CD that allows you to create your own themes.  On the CD, the installation file is found in SDK\Themes\Designer.
  • If you are running out of time, skip the exercises where the students edit the templates and/or the final exercise using the Corporate Presence Wizard.

Lesson 2:

  • If students are curious about the other formats for the results page (e.g., HTML), you can have them quickly create forms using either the templates or Wizards and post the results using several different formats.
  • You may want to have students send the results to their own E-mail address.  Note, however, that you will need to enter the name of an SMTP server in the FrontPage .INI file to do this.  Information about how to do that is included on the FrontPage installation CD.

Lesson 3:

  • You can quickly take students through a couple of the other frames templates, so they have a chance to at least see what it creates for them.

Lesson 5:

  • The exercises in this lesson mention that they may be done as a demonstration. If you are running short on time, then it can be advantageous to just do these as a demo.
